Missing several events and fun activities, in Langkawi was frustrating. We would always hear about ‘happenings’ after the fact, due to inconsistent information sources. So, we started a Facebook GROUP.This was before we had ever heard the words ‘social media’.
The Facebook GROUP, born June 2010 was christened Island Drum of Langkawi. Later affectionately referred to as The Island Drum.
This group slowly grew as more people started using Facebook. They started joining the GROUP and sharing their information. It was a solid community effort! Langkawi is an eclectic Island of interesting locals as well as international ‘visitors’ and although English is not always the 1st language, we manage.
Information is siphoned through to have a weekly update, This Week in Langkawi. Of course there is still missing information at times, but we do the best we can. For the most part, this little process seems to work. Businesses are also able to SHARE their information without spending a small fortune on advertising. It only takes one person to tell another person, right?
Social media has grown immensely in Malaysia. Cultural and language barriers are being crossed and connections are now being made around the world. More and more Malaysian talents are being discovered, old and new, and more people are hearing about them!
So we would like to introduce you to our new overseas family called Langkawi and the people who beat The Island Drum. We think you’ll LIKE!
Oh, and me? My name’s Vanessa , the ‘administrator’ and general “busy body”.
