Ang Yee’s Guest House & Art Cafe

I keep returning to Satun just to ‘get away’ for a change of scenery or passing through as I explore more of Southern Thailand. Satun, I’ve discovered is more than what you might get on first impression. It’s a comfortable sleepy Thai city with an interesting populace and plenty to do in and about the Satun region.

Ang Yee’s has become my place of choice to stay. It’s more like a friend’s home than a guesthouse. Cheah and Mam always greet me warmly when I arrive and it’s  easy to fall into a discussion about what the other has been up to since we last saw each other.

WELCOME TO ANG YEE’S!

The rooms are comfortable and inviting and the two-shared upstairs baths are vast and airy. I’m one that does like an en-suite bath but I have no problem walking across the hall to take a shower in the provided bathrobe and brush my teeth at the hall sink overlooking the garden. What more can I say? It just feels comfortable here.

AND KING SIZE BEDS!

The afternoon and evening always draws an interesting and mixed crowd of locals and expats alike. From the schoolteachers and business owners to local vendors , common ground is always found for a stimulating conversation over
a cold beer or 2… or 3!

A GREAT PLACE TO MEET NEW PEOPLE

The garden area is always cool and shady and a great place to write, read a book or play some backgammon. In the evening one of the favorite spots is the rattan platform that overlooks the garden and has room for a number of people to stretched out on pillows around the low table and chat or compete at board games.

AN EXCELLENT GARDEN!

The interior is adorned with an eclectic assortment of items and artwork that again makes it feels more like someone’s personal home and, well it is. Cheah and Mam live on premises as well. The little details in the rooms such as the clothing hooks made from tree branches and mixed lamps just carries the home feel into your private room.

ECLECTIC HOMEY INTERIOR

Need a scooter? Not a problem as Angyee’s has several for hire. Just pick up a key and go! And the food? Delicious and simple Thai and Western that is prepared by either Cheah or Mam and served at wherever you find yourself perched for the moment. Breakfast is served at whatever time you feel like or not if you are off to somewhere and choose to skip it. Made to order and at your request you will find no cold breakfast buffet here.

MAM & FRIENDS WELCOME ALL

Ang Yee’s is where I come home to when I’m visiting Satun and at 450 Thai Baht a night it always has me considering … maybe just one more day.

Zackry Guest House

Years ago I remember seeing Zackry Guest House listed in a guide book, but it wasn’t until recently when I saw this big giant sign that I’d remembered it. I’d never seen a sign for it before and didn’t even know it still existed. Since  I frequently have people asking me about inexpensive places to stay,  I went to check it out.

‘SIGN’ MARKS THE SPOT

My recent investigations of Pantai Tengah  have revealed quite a few pleasant surprises in the area and this was another one. Just down the road from the sign (that you can’t possibly miss) is a group of varied buildings with a small duck pond in front. You may think you’ve wandered into someones backyard, but keep walking and you’ll see the registration desk.

LITTLE JUNGLE HIDE-AWAYS

The registration ‘desk’ is little more than a podium, but by the looks of things a heavily trafficked podium. The registration is in the same building as the small bar, communal meeting and dining area. Where guests mingle and plan their days often combining their efforts as well as expenses. The adjacent common kitchen area adds to the family atmosphere, where guests often combine meal efforts.

PLANNING AN OUTING

What really got me excited was the bulletin board posting the inexpensive yet fully licensed island-hopping adventures and fishing trips. In addition to manager Sam greeting everyone like family he’s also  a wealth of knowledge and contacts for just about anything on the island. Guest house outings are frequent, fun and very affordable because Sam  is also often the guide.

CLEAN, SIMPLE AND QUIET

Zackry’s has 27 rooms, some with air-con and en-suite bath and also rooms with fan and a shared bath. The price range is from RM 45 for a single and shared bath to RM 65 for an air-con en-suite room.

LOTS OF ‘PERSONAL’ SPACE HERE

Zackry Guest House is located near restaurants that offer a variety of Western, Thai, Chinese and Malay cuisine. And several area restaurants honor a 10-15% discount to Zackry guests! You also have some of the best night life in the Pantai Cenang/Pantai Tengah area with Chill Out, Budaba, Sunba and the Eagle Rock Cafe close by. It’s also just short walk to the beach which is not nearly as populated  as Pantai Cenang.

Langkawi’s Kuala Melaka Inn

After watching this multi-colored building sit empty for several years just begging for visitors, it was quite exciting to see a brand new sign announcing
the birth of the Kuala Melaka Inn. Having an appreciation for ‘recycled’ buildings I went for a visit to see what they had created. Meeting the enthusiastic management team, it was easy to see how their vision and drive had helped make this happen.

KUALA MELAKA INN

The Kuala Melaka Inn is a new an unique concept for a small budget hotel in Langkawi. The hotel is in a renovated office building on the Melaka River. It reminds me of similar hotels in Los Angeles and New York where they are considered very avant -garde.

MONG, MURAD & AZMI , ‘MANAGEMENT’

The industrial feel of the building may not appeal to everyone but it is ingenious and comfortable with a sundry shop and café on the premises. There is also a juice bar adjacent to the Puteri Wellness Spa, which overlooks the rice fields and Melaka River.

FRONT ENTRANCE

The rooms are clean and simple and extremely spacious, all with air conditioning and many with beautiful views of the surrounding Langkawi greenery, the Melaka River and the Andaman Sea.

COZY JUICE BAR

The Kuala Melaka Inn is within a pleasant walk along the river to Padang Matsirat. Or just down the main road is the Rebak Ferry terminal , LBC Restaurant, fabulous De’fruit Center and Kuala Teriang. Lots to see between these areas, from a large Padi Field and abundant nature to the Kuala Muda fishing village

GREEN LANGKAWI

Padang Matsirat has a large wet market, grocery stores, a night market on Sundays, shopping and the historic ‘Field of Burnt Rice’. In Kuala Teriang and Kuala Muda you have a choice of Western, Thai, Chinese and Malay Restaurants as well as easy access to bicycle, scooter and car rentals.

NUR AZAH, SYIMA & NUR NAJATI, FRONT DESK SPECIALISTS!

The staff will be able to assist you with any arraignments you may need or questions you might have about the area. Or arrange transportation to slightly ‘further down the road’  locations, such as Pantai Cenang or Pantai Kok.

WHAT A VIEW!

For the traveler on a budget that wants a spacious accommodation at a very reasonable price with easy access to the surrounding area this is a great choice. You can find them on Facebook too!
