Cruising the Andaman Islands: Langkawi to Phuket

One of the options of getting from Langkawi to as far as Phuket, in one day,
is by high-speed ferry. This window of opportunity is only available from about early November to mid April, due to seasonal winds and waves. I’d seen the service advertised but couldn’t quite source the precise information, so I  dropped into a local travel/tour agency hoping to fill in the gaps.

A treasure map of travel options!

I didn’t just walk into any old travel agency, I hit pay dirt and landed unknowingly into Global Steps Holidays and the office of Andaman Cruise in Pantai Cenang, the Langkawi representative for Tigerline Travel. I’d heard from others’ experiences that the long distant island hops weren’t always pleasant, so I had to experience it for myself. My goal was to go to round-trip from Langkawi to Koh Lanta and ‘blog’ the experience. So here’s how it works…

That 08:30 Langkawi check-in is amazingly fast.

You can book a ticket online for pick up from any island point from Langkawi to Phuket, but booking a Langkawi outward bound  speed boat to high-speed ferry sojourn can also be done in person one-day prior to departure.
Sure, you can save a little money by booking on-line, but if you’d rather be spontaneous and come face-to-face with real people? Let it be known that this option is available at  Global Steps Holiday / Andaman Cruise.

The very busy Porto Awana.

There are some inclusives in this arraignment and some non-inclusives, so please take note. Hotel pick up at the beginning of your journey is included, but not included for incoming (arrivals to Langkawi). It won’t cost you an arm and a leg, it’ll simply be the taxi-van fare share from Langkawi immigration’s office to where ever you choose.

Escort service from Langkawi to Koh Lipe includes these funny guys.

Any long-tail pick-ups en-route from ferry to shore will be 50-baht, payable to the local talent. It’s also wise to change some ringgit into baht prior to departures to Thailand or baht into ringgit for arrivals into Malaysia. Why? For food purchases along the way or taxi rides when hitting land. Expect to deal in appropriate currency and don’t expect to meet a new ‘friend’ on shore who will give-you-a-better-exchange-rate-because-you–live-a-charmed-life. Do expect, the unexpected.

Good-bye, Langkawi!

Ok, enough about that.  Check in time for a Langkawi departure is 8:30am sharp, before heading to immigrations. Transportation will be arraigned for you ahead of time and is included. After immigrations you’re taken to Porto Awana, the luggage is loaded, and you’ll be outward bound by 9:30am-ish.

From transfer from speed boat to Koh Lipe dock, can be tricky.

Occasionally winds and currents can alter precise time schedules, so keep that in mind and try not to moan, “We’re late!” And try not to check your watch every three minutes; you’re on holiday so enjoy the trip. Thailand is also an hour behind Langkawi, so you’re going to gain an hour. Or lose an hour depending on your travel destination. It’s at this point I should recommend you give yourself plenty of time to catch pre-booked flights, etc. Even if some kind soul told you, “Oh, you’ll have plenty of time!” expect the unexpected.

Koh Lipe immigration check-in delivery, via ‘traditional’ long-tail.

There’s a quick immigration stop in Koh Lipe for official Thailand entry, if you’re heading onward and Koh Lipe drop offs and pick-ups as well. By 10:30am (Thai time) and a quick transfer to the Tigerline Travel’s high-speed ferry, you’ll be on your way heading north for a very scenic journey of the Andaman Islands.

You can’t beat great staff like this!

Here’s where I need to forewarn you again. There may be some small athletic maneuvers required when going from speedboat to docks or long-tail boats and a potential to get wet (or drenched), so practical shoes and waterproofing would be to your advantage.

This would be the ‘modern’ long-tail pick-up.

The next actual dock landings are at Had Yao Pier, Koh Lanta, Ao Nang and Phuket. Any island transfers in between will be from ferry to long-tail boat, this is where the practical shoes, waterproofing and baht-on-hand advice comes in again.  These long-tail boat taxis are arraigned ahead of time from Tigerline connections on shore, so rest assured you aren’t being delivered to a ‘stranger’.

Empty seats can equal a great napping spot later!

From Langkawi to the Had Yao Pier will take about 4-hours or so, and the only food available will be a few drinks and snacks for purchase (with baht) on-board the ferry. You’ll be fine if you’re a Pringles fan, but for something more substantial you’ll be glad you have those baht on hand when the boat hits Had Yao Pier. Within seconds of docking, locals come aboard selling fresh fruit, drinks, sandwiches and a variety of homemade goodies. And remember the next dock stop and food source will be in Koh Lanta another 3-hours away.

Had Yao Pier drop-off, pick-up and food!

The expected 6-hour-plus journey to Koh Lanta for me was Internet-free time well spent.  Arriving about 4:30pm actually was later than ‘scheduled’, but not a problem; my agenda was ‘no agenda’.  There’s also plenty of walking room and ample space on the Tigerline ferries, inside as well as the upper deck, so you won’t feel claustrophobic. You could even go top-side and re-enactment the Titanic’s  “I’m King of the World!” scene if you feel inspired.

The much appreciated Had Yao Pier welcome wagon.

On a sunny day, the view is spectacular and the rather loud engine noises eventually become background rumblings. I personally wish I’d gone all the way to the end of the line in Phuket, but there’s always next time. Or the time after that. But wait! I’ve got one more tip for you.
If you happen to be going ’round-trip’, don’t let anyone keep your paper work unless they give you some sort of proof of purchase/reservation document to replace it. It could be a problem for you on the intended return trip.

The less dramatic version of, “I’m King of the World!”

Although the window of opportunity is roughly November to mid-May there are eleven possible points of exploration  through the Andaman-Tigerline connection and a superb option for travel and adventure.  The prices will vary depending on destination points and there are occasionally on-line ‘specials’ to take advantage of, so keep that in mind when planning your trip.

The Koh Lanta arrival is smooth sailing.

And just an added note here; although there are other Langkawi companies that can get you to Koh Lipe, the Andaman Cruise-Tigerline Travel connection is the only one whose time schedule allows you to bypass an over night Koh Lipe stay and travel onward in the same day. Bon voyage!

Koh Lipe’s, Elephant Books & Coffee

It’s always nice to run into fellow countrymen (or women), when traveling overseas. It’s hard to resist that common bond of similarities and comparing notes and opinions. And of all the places to run into two American gals but in
Koh Lipe, Thailand, the next island over from Langkawi, Malaysia. Two best friends, each named Jessica, dropped their busy careers, hit the adventure trail
of Southeast Asia and fell in love with Koh Lipe, Thailand.

They support the arts.

Fast forward two years plus and they aren’t just well respected and active members of this tight knit community, they’re both hard working business women now. By day they run Elephant Books & Coffee and by night
The Longtail Bar in Pattaya Beach, both located on Walking Street.

The Erawan inspired logo.

Others have described Elephant Books & Coffee as a bit San Francisco-ish. And it’s true. San Francisco being my last port of call before embarking into Southeast Asia, that’s exactly what popped into my head the first time I entered the Café. The aroma of espresso and fresh baked goods, the artsy décor and the wall full of used books was a pleasant reminder of my old haunts.

Service with a smile!

A variety of options offered all day!

The café is open daily from 730am until 8pm and although they are quite popular with the breakfast crowds they serve everything from espresso and smoothies to salads and burgers. So picking up a lunch to go before a day of island hopping is a conveniently available. All of their baked goods (including bread) is ‘home-made’ on site and their burgers are made from imported Australian and New Zealand aged beef.

What’s a coffee house without books?

In addition to a great place to start your day or refuel later, Elephant Books & Coffee also buy, sell and trade books. A perfect stop in for travelers or cruising sailors in need of new reading material. They’re located about 500 meters from the entrance of Walking Street in Pattaya Beach on Koh Lipe, just look for the ‘leggy’ Erawan sign.

Ang Yee’s Guest House & Art Cafe

I keep returning to Satun just to ‘get away’ for a change of scenery or passing through as I explore more of Southern Thailand. Satun, I’ve discovered is more than what you might get on first impression. It’s a comfortable sleepy Thai city with an interesting populace and plenty to do in and about the Satun region.

Ang Yee’s has become my place of choice to stay. It’s more like a friend’s home than a guesthouse. Cheah and Mam always greet me warmly when I arrive and it’s  easy to fall into a discussion about what the other has been up to since we last saw each other.

WELCOME TO ANG YEE’S!

The rooms are comfortable and inviting and the two-shared upstairs baths are vast and airy. I’m one that does like an en-suite bath but I have no problem walking across the hall to take a shower in the provided bathrobe and brush my teeth at the hall sink overlooking the garden. What more can I say? It just feels comfortable here.

AND KING SIZE BEDS!

The afternoon and evening always draws an interesting and mixed crowd of locals and expats alike. From the schoolteachers and business owners to local vendors , common ground is always found for a stimulating conversation over
a cold beer or 2… or 3!

A GREAT PLACE TO MEET NEW PEOPLE

The garden area is always cool and shady and a great place to write, read a book or play some backgammon. In the evening one of the favorite spots is the rattan platform that overlooks the garden and has room for a number of people to stretched out on pillows around the low table and chat or compete at board games.

AN EXCELLENT GARDEN!

The interior is adorned with an eclectic assortment of items and artwork that again makes it feels more like someone’s personal home and, well it is. Cheah and Mam live on premises as well. The little details in the rooms such as the clothing hooks made from tree branches and mixed lamps just carries the home feel into your private room.

ECLECTIC HOMEY INTERIOR

Need a scooter? Not a problem as Angyee’s has several for hire. Just pick up a key and go! And the food? Delicious and simple Thai and Western that is prepared by either Cheah or Mam and served at wherever you find yourself perched for the moment. Breakfast is served at whatever time you feel like or not if you are off to somewhere and choose to skip it. Made to order and at your request you will find no cold breakfast buffet here.

MAM & FRIENDS WELCOME ALL

Ang Yee’s is where I come home to when I’m visiting Satun and at 450 Thai Baht a night it always has me considering … maybe just one more day.

Mina’s Roti in Koh Lipe

Amidst the vast number of eateries along Walking Street in Pattaya Beach, Koh Lipe , there are a few standouts. Roti Mina is such a place. After I spotted the fresh cut fruits on display, the assortment of ‘street’ foods and smelled the sweet aroma of fresh roti, then I saw the smiles.

MINA GREETS ALL WITH HER BEAUTIFUL SMILE!

TEAM MEMBER MIDA

Some people may get tired of hearing me yammer on about friendliness and customer service, but I think it’s an often over looked quality. That’s one
reason I like to highlight those friendly folks who inspire my blogging efforts.

THE EVER-SO-BUSY OWNER PAISAN.

Roti Mina is definitely a stand out on Walking Street. Not only do you get great customer service and value, the food is excellent. They have every type of roti combination you can imagine, a total of 33 different kinds! Mina (the namesake) can whip you up a mouthwatering dish in minutes, the scent of her creations wafting down the street like an aromatic billboard.

POPULAR WITH LOCALS AND TOURISTS

ROTI GRILL

But besides roti, Roti Mina has a wide variety of  beef, chicken and seafood dishes, as well as vegetarian. As a big noodle fan, I  go ga-ga over the Kuy Teah Noodle Soup, which comes with your choice of meat, chicken or seafood. Combined  with fresh local vegetables and spices, is a delicious meal. And a
meal it is, because Roti Mina doesn’t  skimp on portions and the average price for a dish is only THB100-150!

ROTI MINA’S NEW SIGN

So when trying to decide between all those choices look for Roti Mina on Walking Street. You may be able to catch the scent in the air before you see the sign and the smiles. (about 300 meters inwards from Pattaya Beach on Walking Street)

Koh Lipe’s Z-Touch Resort

Koh Lipe, Thailand is  one of several beautiful islands within Tarutao National Marine Park and welcomes visitors year round. But regardless of which ferry landing you may be embarking from, when heading to Koh Lipe, Thailand, you will likely be leaving some form of quaint chaos. It’s all very adventuresome, but it can also be quite tiresome for a weary traveler unless you have a personal Sherpa.

FERRY LANDING PAK BARA, THAILAND

But once you land in Koh Lipe, you could be marching straight to Koh Lipe immigrations or breathing a sigh of relief that you’ve already taken care of that (depending on your previous port of departure) , because that beautiful beach and crystal clear water awaits you! But, then there’s that accommodations issue.

Z-TOUCH LIPE ISLAND RESORT

Some people choose the easy route and pre-book accommodations, while others take their chances like a door-to-door salesman. How to choose? Some booking agencies can spout their discount prices, but have they actually checked out the places themselves? I’ve learned from personal experience that many do not.

WANT TO SLEEP HERE?

There is absolutely nothing worse than ending up on a remote island with incorrect information, especially if you pre-booked into a less-than-satisfactory accommodation. One such previous bad accommodations ‘tip’ had me also dragging luggage Sherpa-less in search of decent accommodations, when I saw the sign Z-Touch Resort.

While other hotel guests, down the beach were lounging in the sand on raggedy towels, Z-Touch guests were on comfortable padded lounge chairs with a choice between a very inviting swimming pool or an amazingly clear ocean.

POOL? OR SEA? TOUGH CHOICE

That was it for me, sold! I thought for sure the price would be too much for my budget, but was pleasantly surprised. And they are one of the few places that stay open year round, which was also new information for me. Just because Ferry service from other places are seasonal, Ko Lipe is still a busy community with plenty of places willing to supply services to tourists, regardless of the ‘season’.

A WELCOME SIGN!

Z-Touch Resort takes advantage of their perfect beachfront location by spreading their bungalows out, ensuring guest privacy and comfort. Each comes with air-con, television, hot and cold showers, and a sweet porch to relax on and listen to the sounds of the sea.  And there’s enough of that Robinson Crusoe ‘feel’, to make you feel like an adventurer who hasn’t sold out for comfort.

COZY HOME-AWAY-FROM-HOME

Ok, maybe I did sell out a wee bit, but I like affordable tropical island creature comforts! Like free WIFI, laundry service, jacuzzi and a  breakfast included. In addition to the breakfast buffet selections, Chefs Liam and Aod  have a hot grill ready to cook up some tasty fried rice, rosemary potatoes and eggs if  you so desire, free of charge! The restaurant is open all day as well for lunch, dinner, snacks or cold beverages (including beer).

CHEFS LIAM (center) AND AOD (right) AND TEAM

The staff at Z-Touch Lipe Island Resort are superb and after a long journey I am always grateful for a smile and assistance. Tours can be arranged through the front desk, as well as water and land taxis, which are a great way to sight see! But since the island is small, one can easily walk the entire island. In fact the official ‘Walking Street’ entry is a short distance from the resort, where a variety of eateries, massages, mini-marts, etc…can be found.

EVEN ON A RAINY DAY…

Z-Touch Resort is open year round and even a few rainstorms can’t dampen this tropical home away from home. They have single units and also double units if you happen to want to be next door to your traveling companions.  And some of the single units have King size beds that are spacious enough to share with a travel ‘buddy’, ample sprawling  room for sure.

But they only take cash, so keep that in mind. There is a money exchange at a nearby hotel, but no ATMs available at this time. However there are cash back bank card options at several places, like the pharmacy (Pharmacy House) on Walking Street. Only 500 meters from the beach. Trust me, I wouldn’t give you incorrect information. Can read more about Koh Lipe ( HERE )
